A judge in Washington, D.C., has issued a ruling requiring a man to cease smoking medical marijuana in his apartment because of complaints from a neighbor about the intrusive odor. Judge Ebony Scott determined that Josefa Ippolito-Shepherd had not proven her entitlement to damages but successfully argued that the smell constituted a private nuisance.
Consequently, Scott ordered Thomas Cackett, who is licensed to purchase marijuana but lacks the authorization to disrupt others’ enjoyment of their property, to discontinue his smoking habit. Additionally, Cackett is prohibited from smoking within a 25-foot radius of Ippolito-Shepherd’s residence.
This groundbreaking decision is expected to set a precedent that may result in further legal action. Ippolito-Shepherd expressed her belief that the ruling is a victory for individuals such as her who have lodged complaints about the smell of marijuana, which has been permitted in various forms in most states.
During the January trial, the 76-year-old asserted that she has experienced health issues, including sleep difficulties, since detecting the scent of marijuana in her Cleveland Park home. Ippolito-Shepherd accused Angella Farserotu, the owner of the adjacent property, of enabling Cackett, a tenant in a ground-level accessory apartment, to smoke without facing consequences. Farserotu and Cackett countered by stating that they bear no legal responsibility for Ippolito-Shepherd’s ailments.
This ruling arrives at a time when concerns surrounding the odor of marijuana have emerged alongside the flourishing cannabis industry. Operating within a legal gray area where marijuana remains illegal at the federal level but is sanctioned by individual states, users, sellers and growers have approached this new frontier cautiously. The legal ramifications associated with the smell have now become an additional concern.
During the court proceedings, Cackett testified that smoking medical marijuana alleviates his pain and aids his sleep following physically demanding shifts as a restaurant manager. He refuted the plaintiff’s claims of smoking continuously throughout the day and night, stating that he typically consumes eight to twelve puffs at night after work, usually outdoors if weather conditions permit.
According to public health experts, passive marijuana smoke contains some of the same cancer-causing toxins found in passive tobacco smoke. However, the federal classification of marijuana as a Schedule I drug has hindered long-term studies on its effects and passive smoking.
Advocates for marijuana legalization have expressed concerns that restrictions on smoking locations could limit individuals access to the drug for medical or recreational purposes. Due to marijuana’s federal legal status, federal disability protections do not extend to medical cannabis patients. As complaints related to the now-legal drug’s odor increase, certain cities in California have contemplated banning smoking in multiunit housing. While alternative methods of marijuana consumption exist, such as ingestion or vaping, smoking remains the most prevalent approach.
Some proponents of legalized cannabis sympathize with the notion that marijuana smoke can be bothersome and generally agree that responsible consumption entails being considerate of neighbors and surroundings. They argue that expanding and regulating designated public spaces for cannabis use, similar to the regulations applied to tobacco, would offer the best solution.
This lawsuit illustrates some of the challenges that people who use cannabis for medical reasons face, and one may be compelled to think that the efforts of enterprises such as IGC Pharma Inc. (NYSE American: IGC) to come up with pharmaceutical-grade formulations from THC could help patients wishing to benefit from the therapeutic potential of marijuana without facing the wrath of neighbors who aren’t comfortable with the smell of marijuana smoke.

Canadian licensed producers might be enduring an oversupply and price compression challenge domestically, but troubles within the country’s borders aren’t swaying LPs from looking overseas to invigorate their bottom line.
Whether the shipments head to Israel, Germany, or Australia, Canadian cannabis continues to go global, especially in burgeoning medical cannabis markets.
Aurora is one of the leading Canadian LPs setting their sights globally, with a presence in 14 international markets such as Germany, the UK, Denmark, the Czech Republic, and Uruguay. Boasting medical market share in Canada at around 25%, Aurora is focused on growth opportunities in the medical cannabis market in Europe, says Dirk Heitepriem, VP of external affairs at Aurora Europe.
“This is not just about brand recognition, but about the future success of Canadian licensed producers,” he says.
For a market such as Germany, it makes sense for Canadians to enter the medical space: Germany placed a cap on domestic commercial cannabis production, meaning most medical cannabis needs to be imported.
What helped Aurora establish a foothold in Germany was acquiring a firm with a strong presence in the region. In 2017, Aurora acquired Pedanios, a wholesale importer, exporter, and distributor of medical cannabis in the European Union. “To be in a country looking for high-quality cannabis that also has a reimbursement option for medical cannabis patients, well, it was a no-brainer for us,” says Heitepriem.
Organigram also exports its cannabis to medical cannabis markets in Israel and Australia, beginning as early as 2018. CEO Beena Goldenberg says the LP sought international revenue for two main reasons: consumers want high-quality and consistent cannabis, and the excise-tax costs LPs face in Canada aren’t an issue overseas.
Beena Goldenberg, CEO of Organigram at their New Brunswick facility
Goldenberg also addresses the over-supply challenge in Canada, which continues to plague LPs. According to December 2022 data, the cannabis inventory in the country sat at 19 million units, while sales only reeled in 4.7 million units. “It’s good to get that excess supply out of the country, and it helps to get the first-mover advantage in international markets,” she says.
But does the medical cannabis field attract the same kind of sales as the rec market domestically? Goldenberg doesn’t specify any revenue data, but stresses how the medical cannabis consumer is often committed to a strain that assists them with their ailment while rec users dabble with various strains and formats. Also, branding makes an impact in regions such as Israel.
“When the packaging on products says that the cannabis is indoor grown in Canada, that kind of messaging can differentiate our products from others available there,” she says.
In regions outside Canada, LPs should sign partnerships with local firms familiar with that market’s demographic, says Ranjeev Dhillon, a partner at McCarthy Tetrault LLP, who is co-head of their cannabis practice.
“But even with partnerships in place, getting an export-import license and all the associated costs and time that comes with that…it can be challenging for Canadian LPs looking to scale their business,” says Dhillon.
He noticed that the “empire-building” days of 2018, where LPs were flush with investor funds and media hype, have given way to LPs struggling for “domestic survival,” as he notes. Some LPs shouldn’t look to other countries for revenue when their own homegrown sales are floundering.
The promise of overseas revenue could also give way to a more realistic truth: “Some jurisdictions, down the road, might put in regulations that say, ‘Let’s grow our own cannabis here, in the EU, and restrict how much we import’.”

What LPs have to recognize, is that each country will have its own red tape and regulations to follow, so what an LP had to do to import cannabis into Germany, say, will differ from the paperwork and audits they face when they enter Australia’s market.
Still, even for smaller craft LPs such as Alberta’s Decibel, entering markets such as Israel felt like a natural extension for the brand. “We’re in the unusual position where we have sold everything we cultivate in Canada,” says Adam Coates, Decibel’s Chief Revenue Officer. “And with our fifth shipment to Israel out the door this week, this relationship isn’t going to slow down for us.”
Partnering with Breath of Life in Israel, which handles the processing and distribution of Decibel’s dried flower, the LP broke into the country after noticing how “those medical markets needed consistent and quality cannabis, and we think our craft cultivation process is attractive to those consumers,” says Coates.
“But LPs in Canada can’t expect to just dump their cannabis in an overseas market and expect it to sell. It’s hyper-competitive, and we have boots on the ground in Israel, with a sales team there and engaging in conversations with consumers and pharmacies. This kind of work can be complex but we also wanted to scale our business by looking to take advantage of international markets.”
Everyone is wounded/traumatized to varying degrees. It comes with growing up in a world of ignorance where we are disconnected from Spirit and Nature, and pathology has become normalized. In this world, the false personality is worshipped at the expense of losing our Essence.
Anytime we look outside of ourselves for happiness and fulfillment, it points to a wound/hole within us where we have lost an aspect of our Essence and connection to the Divine.
Most people try to fill these holes unconsciously by looking externally for what they feel is missing and even dissociate from their suffering and emotional body via avoidance, distraction, addictions, mindless media consumption, and live cut off from the wisdom of their bodies in a head-centric existence.
In fact, most people suffer without even knowing that they are suffering because their mind/body connection has split, resulting in dissociation. This boy/mind split and disconnection from essence will increase in the age of A.I./Transhumanism and create more entry points for occult forces to come in.
One of the most challenging things for people is to face the suffering held within the body, which is armored under many unconscious defense mechanisms. Real shadow work is confronting your fears and wounds (most of them are unconscious) and addressing stored trauma in the body — which is far from a walk in the park.
You can read books and quotes about it and may understand it intellectually, but the work itself is painful, scary, messy, and requires immense courage, but not the courage of being outwardly “tough.” As Joseph Campbell said: “The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.”
It’s the courage not to resist discomfort, not to escape into the head or back into your comfort zone, but to be vulnerable and feel it all in the body – for the healing only happens through the body, beyond any intellectual analysis or “story-telling,” beyond any blame or victim mentality, even beyond any premature intellective “forgiveness.”
That’s where the rubber hits the road when it comes to transpersonal self-work, and the internal alchemical fire for transmutation gets ignited through the friction of discomfort and “conscious suffering,” as Gurdjieff and many other teachers talked about, without resisting it, escaping it, nor projecting it outwardly by blaming others or your situation.
This process of Individuation is not a generic self-improvement or self-help program that aims to strengthen the false personality and build a better “mask” to help you reach external goals and fulfill desires which mainly stem from the socially conditioned wounded ego-personality but will never result in lasting happiness, fulfillment or love. It’s not about making your “happiness” depend on external factors.
As Bud Harris wrote in ‘Becoming Whole’:
“It is much more than firming up, losing weight, having more positive thoughts, or solving problems and getting on with your life. Individuation is not self-actualization. The mythologist Joseph Campbell noted that self-actualization is for people with nothing better to do—people who don’t know their personal myth or deeper purpose in life.
The humanistic psychologist Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs for security, prestige[power], self-development, and even personal relationships, are not the primary values a person inspired by their deeper Self, or the thread of their individuation, lives for.”
This more profound inner process requires incredible self-ownership and responsibility for everything you feel. The only way out is through, and there IS light at the end of the tunnel as you realize on a deep embodied level (not just intellectually) that any fear you have had was just an illusion and didn’t reflect your true self (essence), or that you have taken on stuff that is not yours to carry; that you always did the best you could at any time of your life based on where you were at. That unconditional acceptance of what “is” opens the space for healing on much deeper levels.
For example, you may have intellectually realized what your “issues” are, but as long as it’s not embodied and released somatically through your body and felt deeply within you, all you create is a mask, armor, and buffers to avoid facing yourself, while believing you have already worked through your “stuff.” As Gurdjieff said, “You have to pay with yourself.” No one else can “pay” or do the work for you.
This discomfort is medicine and can be used as profound teaching if we don’t resist it. Not only that but feeling the discomfort in the body is the only place where true healing happens.
This process also requires faith and trust and, most of all – letting go. It’s a big lesson in gratitude and humbleness – to be utterly unconditionally grateful for every moment, to see the beauty in simple things, to see how nature teaches us every moment how to “be” if we can tune into the frequencies and energies which are hidden from us long as we live from the head, or are armored up.
The moment we resist the presence, which is all there is, and get into our heads (the tyrant within), we lose the connection to our essence and the Divine, the source that loves us unconditionally and nurtures, guides, and assists us in our individual healing process and this earthly experience during this Time of Transition.
Doing this work is the most important thing/practice in this day and age. We can complain about the world’s “issues” on social media until eternity (which sometimes starts to sound like a “never-ending flushing toilet”), but nothing changes if we don’t go where actual change happens and where it can get really uncomfortable: within and into the body, while also surrendering to what is happening on a bigger picture level in light of the evolution of consciousness beyond our personal processes and 3D Matrix distractions, political and otherwise.
It’s easy to get caught up in our own “shit” (when self/shadow-work becomes a narcissistic self-indulgent/self-pity process) or the world’s miseries if we forget what it is all about and what we are here to do as embodied sovereign individuals and frequency anchors, which is really about “Being.”
That process has profound effects on the outside world (which is not really “outside” or separated from “you”) with regards to reality creation based on your internal healing process as you are clearing your vessel for the Divine force to anchor itself, reconnecting you to who you truly are and your divine purpose.
Know that you are loved and assisted at all times and that no one can take away who and what you indeed are. However, to know this experience yourself in your own being requires sincerity and integrity in your own process to reconnect with your essence; this means not expecting anyone else to do the work for you, to be “saved,” nor expecting the world outside of you to change “for you.”
As long as we are not sincere with ourselves and our own process to honestly “know thyself” beyond the personality mask, we are disconnected from essence, which is the only true source of fulfillment, love, and wisdom that will result in “right action”. This source is an infinite untapped resource that is within us, waiting to be uncovered and remembered through our own sincere Work.
Ancient and Wonderful, Unique and far away from our ‘current capabilities’. Who built the before? What’s to come soon? Where can we go from here and how may we get there? So many amazing examples of wonder from our, perhaps, past to take into account as we see how to intelligently move forward. Join us to see and enjoy our past, present and perhaps that future!

The Los Angeles Department of Cannabis Regulation is gearing up to host the biggest business and professional development event of the season. LA Cannabis Unite Summer Edition will take place 3-9 p.m. Saturday, June 17 at the historic Mayfair Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Everyone is invited to network, learn about cannabis careers and discover business opportunities. The event is free, and complimentary valet parking is available.
“The goal of this networking event is to provide a platform for the community and equity entrepreneurs to meet thought leaders and manufacturers, cultivators, operators, licensees, and employers all across the industry,” says Dr. Imani Brown, director of the Social Equity Program for the City of LA. “We want to celebrate equity entrepreneurs and the cannabis workforce in Los Angeles.”
The afternoon kicks off with supply chain speed dating, where equity operators and businesses will get the chance to meet and greet with the goal of having equity products on dispensary shelves.
There also will be opportunities for one-on-one coaching, and making connections with the LA SEED Grants program, the LA County Bar Association, and more.
“We’re taking over the whole hotel,” Brown says. “We’re going to have three networking and business development floors.”
COMING TOGETHER
Brown says she is looking forward to the in-person event and thinks others are also eager to meet face-to-face.
“We’re just coming out of COVID and people were sequestered for almost three years,” she says. “Folks are hungry for that one-on-one human interaction. I think having these in-person events connects the community, and makes people feel more a part of something.”
Brown says people coming together unlocks encouragement and opportunities.
“I always say that people are your greatest resource,” she says. “An in-person event just takes the experience to another level.”
Entrepreneurs are encouraged to attend in order to find resources they need to thrive, as well as employers looking to add talent to their teams. It’s also perfect for job seekers interested in building careers in America’s fastest-growing industry.
Attendees will include industry leaders, LA city officials, and even Senator Steven Bradford.
“We’re trying to make it easy for people to come out and support this event,” Brown says. “At the end of the day, it’s about relationships, and these kinds of events help to build just that.”
